In 1780, businessman Robert E. Raikes
established the first Sunday School.   
Those who came were given pennies;
teachers were hired at .25 per /Sunday,
and students were taught to read using
the Bible as the textbook.  Later,
John Wesley was the first to suggest
the elimination of payment, and the
Sunday School movement spread.
